This Central Asian hulless landrace has been grown by organic farmers in Ladakh for low input, low tillage farming practices for generations, similar to the conditions we have been growing it under since a farmer in Takmachik Village shared seeds with us. This diverse barley is used in bread, and for malting or roasting and grinding into tsampa, a traditional cereal food throughout much of the Himalayas.
